VyprVPN is a VPN service based in Switzerland, a country that takes Internet privacy very seriously and this is clearly reflected in how VyprVPN operates, too. It is a very private and secure VPN, easy to use and reasonably priced. On the downside, it is not the fastest out there.
Vypr VPN was developed by Golden Frog, a software company from Switzerland.
As Golden Frog proudly states it, the company doesn’t use any third parties and everything is 100% managed by Golden Frog. That translates into a more secure and private Internet experience for the users.
Vypr has over 700 servers worldwide, located in more than 70 countries across the Globe.
The pricing plan for their Vypr service is real simple, with only 2 options to choose from: Vypr VPN and Vypr VPN Premium.
There is no free plan, but both their plans are affordable.
With the simple VyprVPN plan you get 3 simultaneous connections and with the Premium plan you get 5 simultaneous connections, access to VyprVPN Cloud and the Chameleon Protocol. The Chameleon protocol prevents websites and certain services from seeing you are using a VPN, by scrambling the metadata. The Chameleon Protocol technology helps you overcome firewalls (from the Government, corporations and the like) and bandwidth restrictions.
Both plans come with a 3-day free trial and 30-day money back guarantee.
The design of the interface is user-friendly enough, but don’t expect anything impressive. Golden Frog is not that focused on updating the look of the interface that often. You can easily figure out how to use everything, although there are some minor inconveniences that might annoy you, such as the fact that you have to open separate windows for some actions/settings.
VyprVPN also includes the popular Kill Switch feature.
When it comes to Netflix, expect a success rate of approximately 50%. On some servers you might get lucky, on others, not so much. EU servers are pretty much a ‘no no’ when it comes to unblocking Netflix content.
In terms of torrenting, while VyprVPN doesn’t forbid you from this type of online activity, it doesn’t encourage it either. It will not monitor the content of your traffic nor will it block you in any way, but you do have to take into consideration your local copyright law, as copyright infringement might get your account suspended.
By default, VyprVPN uses the OpenVPN protocol but you also get access to L2TP, PPTP and IPSec if you want to.
VyprVPN uses AES-256 encryption, the same used by FBI, CIA.
In addition to the Chameleon Protocol, which is only available to Premium users, VyprVPN also has its own DNS servers, the VyprDNS, which is another privacy measure and protects you from censorship and cyber attacks.
Golden Frog does retain your IP address, the number of bytes used and your start and end connection time, for a period of 30 days, but they will provide minimal info on their users only if directed by a court order.
In terms of compatibility, VyprVPN works on macOS and Windows devices, iOS and Android, Android TV devices (if you install a special APK) and there is also an app that you can use to protect Tomato MIPS/ARM routers.
The VyprVPN only has 2 pricing plans: the VyprVPN and the VyprVPN Premium.
The VyprVPN is $5/month billed annually or $9.95/month billed monthly.
The VyprVPN Premium is $6.67/month billed annually or $12.95/month billed monthly.
As for the available payment methods, you can use all the major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and more), you can pay through Alipay or Paypal, but unfortunately, until the time of writing this review, cryptocurrency (such as Bitcoin, etc.) was not available.
As mentioned before, VyprVPN has more than 700 servers in approximately 70 countries worldwide, including regions such as Asia, Middle East, Africa, North and South America and of course Europe.
While it’s not the most impressive number of servers we’ve encountered in an VPN service, their wide spread is definitely a plus, because it means you can easily find a close server to you when you are on the road. A closer server to your location translates into a lower latency and a better Internet speed for you.
In latency, downloading and uploading speed tests, VyprVPN didn’t manage to impress, obtaining pretty disappointing results when it came to download speeds.
EU servers are better optimized and faster, and speed results do change and vary rapidly, but overall, VyprVPN is not among the fastest VPNs out there.
However, if you want a VPN provider that offers great security, it is easy to use and it is reasonably priced, VyprVPN is definitely worthy of your attention.
