COMPLETE REVIEW

The Soundcore Flare Bluetooth speaker is an Anker Innovations product. The company was founded in 2011 and is based in China.

The Soundcore Flare speaker is a low-budget Bluetooth device that has managed to get a good reputation, because it is very affordable yet packed with some really nice features.

Here are the main specifications of the speaker:

  • Dimensions: 3.5 x 3.5 x 5.95 inches
  • Weight: 18.7 ounces
  • Battery life: 12 hours (charging time: 3.5 hours to full)
  • Bluetooth version 4.2
  • Range: 66 feet
  • 2 x 1.75” full range +2 x passive radiator
  • Output: 2 x 6W
  • Total harmonic distortion: <=1%

Design

The Soundcore Flare is a flashy speaker, built for partying. It is like a cylinder that gets wider at the base. It is covered in a fabric grille and the bottom is rubberized. You can place the speaker upright, without worrying that it will move around from the vibrations.

The Soundcore Flare is IPX7 rated, meaning you can immerse it into 1 m deep water, as it is fully waterproof. The USB port and the 3.5 aux input are protected and on the bottom there is a multi-color LED bar that changes colors depending on the music. It is like having your own beat synchronized light show.  It is a really cool touch which makes this a great show-off speaker for student parties or so. Also, when you place the speaker upright, the LEDs shine on the surface you place it on. The lights can be turned off by pressing the Light button on the top of the speaker or from the Soundcore app.

On the top of the speaker you’ve got the controls for volume, playback, a BassUP button and one for changing the color of the LED bar. You can also adjust the colors from the app.

The app lets you control other aspects too, such as the EQ settings, pairing another speaker to the same device and more.

The power and pairing buttons are on the back of the speaker.

Performance

The Soundcore Flare can be used with or without the app. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded for free.

The built-in microphone is not flawless but does its job in case you need to take a phone call.

The battery life of the Soundcore Flare lasts for up to 12 hours on a single charge, give or take, depending on the volume and how much you use the LEDs.

The overall sound quality of the Soundcore Flare is pretty impressive, given its price. The sound is balanced, with the option to boost the bass from the dedicated BassUp button. The overall effect of this button and the EQ settings in general are quite subtle though, don’t expect to hear such big differences. The speaker is loud enough and doesn’t distort at high volumes. In some cases the high frequencies can sound a bit harsh, but this again depends a lot on the music you are listening to.

The Soundcore Flare speaker is definitely a good bargain. It is ruggedly built, entertaining with its colorful LEDs and sounds impressively well for the money.

Pricing

You can get the Soundcore Flare speaker for $60. Color-wise, you can choose between black and blue.
