Wix is a cloud-based website builder developed by the company with the same name.

The company was founded in 2006 in Israel and now also has offices in the US, Lithuania, Ukraine, Germany and Brazil.

Wix is currently used by 100 million users from 190 countries.

This website builder has HTML5 capabilities, over 500 fully customizable templates and more than 1000 free features that help you design an attractive website, regardless of its purpose and target: from personal sites, blogs, platforms for musicians/bands, photographers, entrepreneurs and larger businesses.

Wix has a free version that includes unlimited pages, up to 500 MB storage, a drag and drop editor, hundreds of templates, a mobile site and secure hosting. If you just want to create a simple personal site or blog, the free version will be more than enough.

If you want to get even more, you can sign up for one of their 5 Premium plans. All the Premium plans include free hosting, domain connection, Google Analytics, at least 500 GB storage or more and Premium support.

Here are the Premium plans and the features they include:

The most basic one is the Connect Domain and includes 1 GB bandwidth and 500 MB storage. The most annoying thing with this plan is the fact that it constantly displays ads and there is nothing you can do about them. All the other Premium plans give you the possibility to remove those ads, but this one doesn’t. Nor does the free version, which also abounds in them…

The Combo plan includes 2 GB bandwidth and 3 GB storage, free domain and customized Favicon.

These two plans are mostly suited for personal use.

The Unlimited plan, which is the most popular one according to Wix, is tailored for freelancers and entrepreneurs. It includes unlimited bandwidth, up to 10 GB storage, a form builder app ($48 value) and a site booster app ($60 value).

The eCommerce plan comes with 10 GB bandwidth, up to 20 GB storage, all the other features of the Unlimited plan and an online store.

The highest tier is the VIP plan, which comes with unlimited bandwidth, up to 20 GB storage, all the benefits included in the eCommerce plan,10 email campaigns/month and a professional site review.

The interface of Wix is straightforward and intuitive. The drag and drop editor really makes everything simple for any user, regardless of his skills and everything works in the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) mode. You can literally see your website as you build it. You can easily add and edit elements (buttons, icons, contact forms, dozens of audio players, etc.) and pages, add and configure apps and so on. When you are first getting started, you’ll also be greeted by a helpful instructional video on how to use all the basic tools.

Since 2016, you can choose between Wix’s 2 editors: the standard Wix Editor and the Wix ADI Editor (artificial design intelligence).

The ADI editor is a new, interesting and cool tool that basically builds the site for you. It works by trying to understand what kind of website you want to obtain, by asking you some questions before you get started (about yourself, your business and so on). You can also enter any existing website or social profile (Facebook, Twitter and so on). Based on the answers you give it and the data it extracts, it will start searching for relevant information and then build your website without a single mouse click on your part.

Templates and design

Another thing we liked while testing this program was its flexibility. Wix gives you a lot off freedom of creation and every little detail is highly customizable.

On the downside, we didn’t appreciate the fact that Wix doesn’t let you change templates. Once you picked one out, you are stuck with it, which is a major disadvantage, because everyone wants to be able to try out as many options as they want before deciding on a final template. If you change your mind and want to go with a different one, you have to insert all your content all over again.

While the main structure of the template can’t be modified, you can mess around with design elements such as colors, the background and so on.

The templates are arranged by category: Personal, Services and Business, Entertainment, etc. After you select a template, you also get a mobile-optimized version of it. You might have to tweak it a bit to your taste and Wix gives you the option of editing the mobile version.

Wix has a generous App Market that includes hundreds of free and paid apps from them and third-party providers.
