COMPLETE REVIEW

Norton Security Deluxe got excellent results on the AV-Test evaluation in the areas of usability and protection. It has many useful features plus an omnipresent tech staff who you can contact in several different ways. For the price of one suite, Norton Security Deluxe allows you to secure up to five of your devices at no extra charge.

Features

Most internet security suits have different features depending on the level of protection you wish to instate. Norton Security Deluxe, however, offers all of them in one, well-rounded package. It has features aimed at the newer, just emerging threats such as ransomware. Ransomware is a specific kind of malware that hackers use to lock down your PC until you pay a certain amount. Unfortunately, in most cases, even when you do pay, hackers leave without granting you access to your system. To prevent this very serious threat, Norton Security Deluxe is one of the security suites that offer the much needed anti-ransom feature. With a single license, the suite can protect up to five of your devices, including you phone. All devices and their protection can be managed online, from Norton’s website.

To fill the many holes Windows Defender firewall has, Norton’s security suite comes with an additional firewall software. Keeping your inbox neat and spam-free shouldn’t be a problem since there is an excellent anti-spam scan in the package. The scan also extends to your IMs and USB drives so you can be sure that whenever you insert a foreign USB drive into your PC it won’t go unchecked. Since no security software can guarantee to protect against all threats, Norton still does a very good job at stopping most known and new possibly infected files. If you want to make an online backup of your files, the feature is also available in the Norton Security Deluxe package. This is very useful in case your PC gets infected beyond repair and you need to restore your important files. If you don’t like uploading your data to the internet, you can make a bootable rescue CD to restore your system in case of a serious virus infection.

One thing we noticed Norton Security Deluxe lacked compared to other products in its category is a social media tool. This feature usually allows you to monitor your children’s use of social networking sites and take appropriate action. With this being said, Norton Security Deluxe does have a good Parental control feature where you can fully restrict your kids from accessing certain areas of the internet including social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter etc.

As most security suites do, Norton also offers a more expensive, higher level security package, the Norton Premium Security Suite. Aside from it offering an elevated security level, it also comes with 10 licenses you can distrube among your devices such as phones or tablets. There is file shredder included in the package and it comes in very handy when you want to eliminate files from your PC completely, instead of just relocating them. Even though Norton’s password manager secures your online transactions and password inputs, there is no viable virtual keyboard included in the suite.

Performance

During the spring of 2016, the independent software test lab, AV-Test, evaluated 22 internet protection suites to see how well they would perform on Windows 10 computers. Norton Security Deluxe scored highly when it came to discovering and protecting against more than 22,000 known and new threats. On the usability test, Norton had only one false positive when it was supposed to differentiate between threats and healthy files. The security suite was put up against 1.2 million non-threatening websites and it only made a single mistake, putting Norton Security Deluxe well above the industry average of three misidentifications. The performance test that measures the lag caused by security programs while you’re performing different actions on your PC, showed that while Norton did slow down the host PC, it still performed better than most products in the internet security suites category.
