SUMMARY:

The Samsung SEW-3043W does have its strengths and weaknesses, but overall, it’s a very reliable and high-end baby monitor. The greatest thing about it is the crisp, clear, high quality sound and video and the generous 5 inch display. The SEW-3043W has a lot of useful features, alerts and capabilities and it is extremely easy to set up and use. It does leave room for improvements when it comes to its touch screen and the lack of an additional app, but it makes up through its top-notch HD quality, which is one of the most important things customers look for in a baby monitor.

COMPLETE REVIEW

The SEW-3043W from Samsung is one of the best-selling baby cams on the market. It is a high-end HD baby monitor with a 5.0 inch touchscreen, night vision and two-way audio.

Setting it up is as simple as just plugging in the device and positioning the camera.

  • Weight: 2.1 lbs
  • Monitor resolution: 800x480
  • Video resolution: 1280x720
  • Video compression format: MPEG-4
  • Lens Focal Length: 4.5 mm
  • Zoom ratio: 1x/1.5x/2x
  • Batteries: 2500mAh 3.8V Li-ion
  • Communication range: Up to 900 ft

The SEW 3043W is equipped with lots of useful features: night vision up to 16 feet, can support up to 4 cameras, has a two-way talk and a feeder time alert. There is also a soft glowing night-light.

It can pan up to 300 degrees and tilt up to 110. The baby monitor comes with 4 pre-programmed lullabies. There is a 5-level sound indicator on the monitor unit that lets you visually monitor the noise level in the baby room. This feature is useful for the times when you want to put the monitor on ‘mute’.

The biggest strength of this baby monitor though remains by far its video quality. The SEW 3043W has one of the highest camera to monitor speeds (4Mbps) which ensures a clear and crisp both video and audio signal. The 5 inch display and the 1280x720 recorded videos (shot at 30 frames/sec) offer a great picture quality, with no annoying lags.

However, one thing we found to be quite outdated and less desirable was the touch screen which is way harder to use than your average smartphone today. You have to press quite hard on it for any function to work and it has a really unsatisfying feel. You can’t scroll or swipe and the buttons are also placed on the screen and not on the side, as you would expect it. You can access the settings, zoom, etc. options through a double tap. The zoom, tilt and pan options allows you to change the viewing angle of the room directly from the monitor unit.

Another drawback of the 3043W is the fact that there is no additional application, for uses such as remote viewing for instance. There is also no temperature sensor.

One interesting feature is the feed timer alert. You can set a certain time and when that time comes, you will receive a notification to feed your baby.

The 900 feet range is a generous value and you’re not going to normally experience any signal loss. When you do get out of range, there are also video and audio alerts that warn you that you’ve lost the connection.

The battery life is decent. The SEW-3043W is equipped with a 2500mAh battery, which is pretty good generally speaking, although the high resolution does drain the energy quite fast. You can use the bay monitor on 3 settings: normal video mode, audio mode only or VOX mode, meaning the monitor turns on only when it detects any noise. If there is no sound for 30 seconds, in the VOX mode the baby monitor goes to sleep. On the VOX mode the battery can last up to 7 hours, while on normal, continuous usage it lasts for about 4 hours.

The Samsung SEW-3043W comes with a one-year warranty.

Pricing

On Amazon, the Samsung SEW-3043W can be purchased for $179.
