COMPLETE REVIEW

Infant Optics DXR-8 is a portable video baby monitor manufactured by Infant Optics. Infant Optics is an American company based in San Francisco, on the market since 2011. So far, they’ve only produced baby monitors.

As advertised on their website, the Infant Optics DXR-8 is their first baby monitor with interchangeable lens technology.

Specifications:

  • Transmission range: up to 700 feet
  • Channel bandwidth: 3.375 MHz
  • RF Frequency: 2400 Mhz – 2483.5 Mhz
  • Monitor resolution: 320 X 240
  • Display size: 3.5 inches
  • Battery: 1200 mAH Li-ion rechargeable battery (7 hours to fully charge)
  • Battery life: 10 hours (stand by); 6 hours (screen on)
  • Weight: 2 lbs
  • Dimensions: 19.3 x 13.4 x 6.5 inches
  • Here are the full specifications: http://infantoptics.com/dxr-8-baby-monitor/

The DXR-8 has several useful features: invisible IR night vision, two-way talk, remote temperature display and more.

The fact that it uses the interchangeable lenses technology means that you can customize the viewing angle, depending on the room (of its shape and size). You can also use this device as a camera.

The box includes a normal and a 2x optical zoom lens and if necessary, you can also buy the 170-degree wide-angle lens, which is sold separately.

The DXR-8 monitor allows you to add up to 4 additional cameras to it, at an extra price of course. This can be a useful thing if you have more than one child you need to supervise.

We have to admit that we found the screen to be a bit small, at its 3.5 inches. You can find a lot of other options with a bigger screen.

There are 4 available buttons (menu, shortcut, talk, OK) on the monitor unit and a 4-way controller. The shortcut button gives you quick access to the brightness and volume options.

Right from the get-go we liked how easy to set up and use the DXR-8 is. Everything is straightforward and there are clear instructions you can follow in case you experience any problems.

The battery life of the DXR-8 is another impressive feature of this baby monitor. The 1200 mAH battery can go up to over 10 hours on power save. If you opt for this mode, only the sound will remain active but there will be no available video. This will reduce your consumption by 50%. Even with the screen on though, you can squeeze around 6 hours of energy out of the DXR-8. The unit can easily be charged from your computer/laptop via USB.

We also appreciate the openness of Infant Optics and the fact that it strives to constantly improve and listen to its customers’ needs. Until 2015, the Infant Optics baby monitors came with annoying warning alerts and many customers complained. When the baby monitor was low on battery or out of range, a warning beep was automatically enabled and there was no ‘disable’ option available. This issue was fixed and now you can turn off the alerts from the menu.

The camera can be controlled from the remote monitor unit with the pan and tilt option. The DXR-8 can pan up to 270 degrees and can tilt up to 120 degrees. The zoom is also useful and the night vision is another note-worthy tool.

The baby monitor shows you on the display the temperature in the room where the camera is installed.

As for the signal of the DXR-8, you’ll be happy to know that this device performs flawlessly, it has a good reception and doesn’t go out of range as fast as many competitors.

In conclusion, we consider the DXR-8 a good value for the money. It is fairly priced and while it doesn’t have the larger display and a ton of features, you will get a reliable device with a good battery life, customizable viewing angles and all the basic tools you need.

Pricing

You can buy the DXR-8 on Amazon for approximately $128.
