COMPLETE REVIEW

Philips Avent DECT SCD570 is one of the best-selling audio baby monitors on the market today. Despite the fact that it lacks video capabilities, this is nevertheless a high-tech piece of equipment with advanced features.

One of the biggest strengths of this monitor is its DECT technology. Most baby monitors use the common 2.4 GHz frequency, just like all the other devices in your home: phones, routers, etc. That is why you can experience a lot of annoying interference. Monitors such as this one, which have DECT technology, work on a different frequency (1.9 GHz), which is not that overcrowded. That means you’ll get the clearest sound quality, with zero interference and 100% private and secure connection, thanks to the advanced data encryption.

Specs:

  • Frequency band: DECT
  • LCD screen
  • Temperature sensor
  • Indoor range: up to 50m
  • Outdoor range: up to 330m
  • Item dimensions: 8 x 3.5 x 6 in
  • Operating time on battery hour: 18 hours
  • Charging time: 10 hours

This Philips Avent has 5 in-built lullabies and a soothing night light that allows your baby to fall asleep easily and peacefully, a talkback function and a temperature sensor.

One of the best things about this monitor though is its impressive crystal clear sound quality, ensured by the DECT technology. The SCD570 is also powerful, with a max. volume of 101 decibels. That is more than enough to get your attention even if you’re dozed off. There’s also a useful filter so that you won’t experience annoying, unnecessary background noises.

The monitor unit is button-based. There are 4 buttons on the front and 3 on the side of the receiver. The front ones control the volume and menu and the side ones the talk option, night light and power.

There is an option to control the sensitivity of the microphone, so you can set the level of sound your baby’s unit picks up, a volume control, alerts for out of range and low battery and an ECO mode. Back on the alerts, there’s also a light alert available, for when you choose to put the monitor on ‘mute’.

The SCD570 baby unit has a pager alert button that you can use in case you misplace your receiver. But the scatterbrained parents out there could also benefit from the included lanyard to keep the monitor unit close to them.

The LCD display on the monitor unit is not the most attractive one and it will remind you of the old mobile phones. There is no touch screen and the display is pretty small and in some conditions, difficult to read.

The battery life of the Philps Avent SCD570 is quite good, with a guaranteed run time of 18 hours, although in our tests, we’ve managed to squeeze more than that. On the downside though, this device does take a long time to recharge. 10 hours to be more specific, which we find a bit too much.

In conclusion, the Philips Avent SCD570 is a very professional audio baby monitor, with an excellent and secure audio quality, offered by the DECT technology. It isn’t the most affordable baby monitor you can find, which may be a deal breaker for some, especially given the fact that it has no video capabilities, but it does have a lot of useful features and an overall impressive quality.
