COMPLETE REVIEW

Nanit is a start-up company based in New York. The company has gain reputation through its famous Nanit Sleep system, a smart, cloud-based video baby monitor.

The Nanit Sleep System is pricey but it is definitely a high-end piece of equipment and one of the most complex and sophisticated on the market.

The Nanit baby monitor comes with an impressive 24/7 HD live streaming, works with WiFi and has a dedicated app that is compatible with both iOS and Android devices.

The system works with WiFi and over WiFi, meaning that if your Internet goes down, you can still use the app and the monitor will still work. It will just use the signal of your router and it will send the video from the Nanit camera to your smartphone. All you have to do is make sure you are connected to your router and that it is working properly.

Security is a real concern with Nanit, because the company knows a lot of parents out there aren’t thrilled with data about their baby being saved in the cloud and with WiFi baby monitors in general, as WiFi networks can be hacked. That is why Nanit uses AES 256-bit key encryption and it complies with federal security standards.

Setup and use

The Nanit Sleep System is a very complex monitoring system and it may require some time before everything is installed and running smoothly. First, you have to decide which mount you want to use: wall, floor or multi-stand. Whether you choose to use the wall or floor mount, the camera will be placed directly above your baby’s crib, giving you a bird’s eye view.

Next, you have to download and install the Nanit app in order to start using the baby monitor. Once you open the app, it will guide you through the setup process. There is no base unit, your base unit is your own mobile device, smartphone or tablet, which you can use from anywhere in the world to monitor your baby, as long as there is an Internet connection and you’ve got the app installed on your device.

Features and the app

The Nanit Sleep System is a really advanced gadget. It has a lot of smart sensors, based on which you receive notifications depending on humidity, temperature, sound or the position of the baby crib. In the app, you can adjust the level of motion and sound that trigger those notifications.

The system also uses a complex algorithm to learn your baby’s sleeping patterns, analyze them and send you reports and suggestions on how to improve his sleep. All the data can be accessed using their Insights feature. The Insights feature is included when you buy the system, but it is just for a year and only offers access to 30 days of video history.

The Nanit camera delivers an impressive 960p HD video, with a sharp, clear image and a great sound quality. However, be aware that this system doesn’t have two-way communication. There are no lullabies included either. The camera has 10 infrared LEDs for nighttime and a nightlight above, which gives a diffused light and points towards the ceiling so it wouldn’t bother the baby. The light can be turned on or off in the app, directly from your phone, but there are no brightness or color adjustments available.

The app allows multiple users to access the camera feed using their smartphones.

Using the app, you can also zoom in the image without compromising image quality too much.  Using the app you can also turn the audio on and off and take a picture of your baby.

If you are using the Nanit Insights feature, there are a plethora of details displayed in the app. On the dashboard you can see the sleep stats, when the baby went to sleep, how many hours he slept, how many times you visited the baby and more.

The Nanit Sleep System is without a doubt one if not the most advanced baby monitors on the market right now. It can do so much more than monitor your baby, it can also act as a sleep trainer. The app is extremely complex, the quality of the video is excellent and the camera is packed with smart sensors and smart features. And the fact that you can monitor your baby from anywhere in the world, by simply looking at your smartphone, is definitely a plus. However, all these bells and whistles come with a matching price which doesn’t agree with everyone’s wallet.

Pricing

The Nanit Sleep System has a steep price. You can get it for $379 or you can choose to pay it in monthly rates, in 3, 6 or 12 months (if you get it from the official Nanit website). Rates can go as low as $34/month. The Nanit system includes the camera, a wall mount, a multi stand, especially for traveling and the app. For an additional $50 you can also get the floor stand. You can also subscribe to one of their Nanit Insights plan: $100/year to have access to the last 30 days of video history and sleep data, or $300/year for the Nanit Insights Unlimited, which gives you unlimited access to data and video history, not just for the last 30 days. The Nanit Sleep System comes with 45-day money back guarantee.
