SUMMARY:

TP-Link RE580D is a great choice for boosting the WiFi signal in your large home. It has great range and though its throughput rate could be higher, it’s still satisfactory. It’s a little bigger in size, but it comes with three detachable antennas and five Ethernet ports. Priced reasonably, TP-Link RE580D is a solid range extender for a larger home.

COMPLETE REVIEW

The TP-Link RE580D is a mighty range extender capable of speeds up to 1.9Gbps. It comes with some serious data processing power, featuring a dual-core processor for maximum efficiency. Thanks to its powerful stats, the RE580D is a bit bigger than other range extenders on the market. Nevertheless, this is a small price to pay for a WiFi booster that easily overcomes obstacles other similar devices have trouble with.

Design

TP-Link RE580D shares one more thing with Netgear’s WiFi extender, it’s big and bulky. With dimensions of 9.5 x 7.8 x 1.8 inches, RE580D is one of the biggest devices of its kind on the market. Although looks shouldn’t be the main reason for choosing a WiFi booster, TP-Link’s size makes it difficult to store in places like desks, or smaller shelfs. Nevertheless, the device can be mounted to a wall which might be the most sensible solution for its storage.

It comes with three adjustable antennas that can be fully rotated to point in the exact direction you want. Another great thing about the TP-Link RE580D is that it comes with five Ethernet ports, which means you’ll be able to plug all your other devices without having to choose.

Pricing

TP-Link RE580D currently goes for $119.99 on TP-Link’s official page. The company offers a two-year limited warranty on this device with complementary support. Before buying you should also check other authorized resellers like Amazon, Home Depot or Best Buy since they often have promotions that can save dozens of dollars.

Performance

To make sure the TP-Link RE580D deserved to be in our top ten review of the best WiFi extenders, we looked at its test results. During the tests, we looked at how fast it takes to initially install the device and we measured the overall throughput rate – the speed at which data travels over the wireless network. TP-Link RE580D recorded satisfactory results on both tests.

Despite its intimidating exterior, the RE580D scored average on the range extending test. Considering its size and price, we expected the device to extend much further than the 125 ft. it recorded. Nevertheless, this is still a very good length, enough to cover a larger home without any major omissions. Just to be safe, in case you have a large home, you might want to look at some other WiFi extenders since some other devices go as far as 165 feet.

Surely one of the most important tests is the one that measures the throughput rate of each individual device. The fastest WiFi extender in our review was the Netgear Nighthawk EX7000 at 413 Mbps which is an impressive record. The TP-Link RE580D did somewhat worse than our top contender, but it still had a satisfactory throughput rate of 327Mbps. While not the most impressive score, you shouldn’t experience any lag transferring your data. Interestingly enough, both the Nighthawk and the RE580D have similar specifications, running on two bands, both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. This, and the dual core processors allow them to develop greater throughput speeds than most other WiFi boosters we examined.

The setup process took less than expected and we managed to fully install the device in less than 10 minutes. Since the process is almost fully automatic, after you’ve setup both frequencies all you have to do is choose a name and password for your new network.
