PROS:
CONS:
The ZenWatch 3 by Asus is one of the best looking and most elegant smartwatches we’ve seen. It simply spells luxury and style. While it does lack a lot of features such as GPS, NFC, HR sensor, it does have a microphone and speaker, allows you to reply to messages and it’s now updated to Android Wear 2.0. It is not the best option for fitness enthusiasts and it’s not as practical and complex as the major players on the market, but it does have all the basic tools you need in a smart watch, all packed in an attractive, fashionable wearable.
The ZenWatch 3 from Asus is an elegant watch with a round shape, as supposed to its square predecessor, the ZenWatch 2. It has a fancy design, closer to the analog watches. It was released at the end of 2016.
Main specifications:
The ZenWatch 3 comes in 3 available colors: silver, gunmetal and rose gold. You can swap the band/strap, but because of the unique lugs or ‘wings’ of the watch, you’ll have a hard time trying to fit something else than their proprietary straps.
Right from the start you’ll be impressed by the beautiful, elegant look of the watch, despite of its somehow chunky aspect. It has a stainless steel case and 3 buttons on the right side, for enabling Eco Mode, turning on and off the watch and to launch an exercise app. The cool thing is that you can customize the functions of the buttons, according to your needs.
The display is not the sharpest we’ve seen, but bright enough to see in any light. You can choose between dozens of watch faces, over 50 to be more exact, grouped in 6 categories (themes) and you also have the option to create your own, personalized watch face, with the help of the FaceDesigner app.
Features
Although you can track your activities with the ZenFit app and there’s a 6 axis gyroscope and accelerometer to count your steps, don’t expect the complexity of a sport smartwatch in the ZenWatch 3. The watch doesn’t have a heart rate sensor, nor does it have a built-in GPS. It is not waterproof either, only IP67 certified, which means you can only shower with it, at most. It cannot be used for swimming. However, the watch can track several activities, including push-ups and sit-ups and has inactivity alerts that motivate you to move at regular intervals.
While there’s WiFi and Bluetooth, there’s no NFC on the ZenWatch 3.
With the new Android Wear 2.0 OS, the ZenWatch 3 has now improved considerably. It has a better compatibility with iOS phones, although it will always work better with Android smartphones. The watch has a microphone and a speaker and you can use Google Assistant and give voice commands.
If you have Bluetooth headphones you can use your watch to listen to music when you go jogging, using Google Play Music, so that you don’t have to take your phone with you. You can reply to text messages using the tiny keyboard, although it won’t be the most pleasant thing trying to hit or swipe the right letters on such a small screen.
The battery life of the ZenWatch 3 is not the best or the worst. You can squeeze around 2 days on a single charge, depending on your usage. In our tests, we’ve only managed to make it last for 1 day and a half. On the bright side though, the ZenWatch 3 comes with a very useful feature: quick-charging, which charges the watch from 0 to 60% in just 15 minutes. There’s also an Eco Mode which, according to Asus, extends the battery life by over 200%. The Eco Mode turns off the notifications and networking thus preserving the battery.
While the ZenWatch 3 does have its shortcomings and doesn’t really stand out in terms of features and abilities, it will steal a lot of hearts with its luxurious, elegant and attractive design. It has beautiful watch faces, it is very customizable and has a decent battery life.
You can get the ZenWatch 3 on Amazon for approximately $270.
