PROS:
CONS:
Huawei Watch 2 is a sporty smartwatch with a bit of a rugged, chunky look. It doesn’t have the slimmest, most elegant design, but it comes with built in GPS, 4G, NFC and more. It does leave room for improvement when it comes to its operating speed, but its Android Wear 2.0 OS does open a lot of possibilities. It is an average watch with pros and cons, but definitely high-quality enough to be worthy of your consideration.
Huawei has grown significantly on the tech market in the last couple of years. They have recently started to experiment with smartwatches as well and so far, we think they’re moving in the right direction.
The Huawei Watch 2 is a popular wearable which has almost everything you can look for in a smart watch. It was released in April 2017.
Here are the main specifications of the watch:
As you can see, the Huawei 2 is not 100% waterproof. Its IP68 rating only makes it suitable for limited exposure to water, both in terms of time and quantity (copes with rain or showers). So if wearing your smartwatch while you go swimming is a priority for you, this is not the watch for you.
On to the design of the watch, we have to admit it’s not the most elegant and delicate smartwatch you can find. It is a sporty, chunky and bulky watch and it comes with a plastic case, unless you opt for the Classic version which also has stainless steel. The Huawei watch 2 is available in 3 colors: Dynamic Orange (and has 4G), Carbon Black (4G or non-4G, at your choice) and Concrete Grey (non 4G). The Classic version of the watch doesn’t have 4G support.
In spite of its size, the Huawei Watch 2 has a smaller display than the previous version, which will prove annoying especially when you try to use the tiny keyboard on it. There are 2 round buttons on the right side. It has an average brightness level and touch screen.
Features
While design might not be Huawei’s biggest strength, the watch does pack a lot of useful features. It has a nanoSiM slot (and also supports eSIM), a built-in GPS, NFC, Bluetooth and WiFi. It has preinstalled fitness apps: Heart Rate, Google Fit and Workout and a few more. The fact that you can make calls and answer to them directly from your wrist is an important feature for some people, who want to become as independent from their smartphones as possible and the Huawei Watch 2 gives them that option.
It is a good fitness watch, with First Beat collaboration that guides you through your workout, makes customized running/training plans for you and more. There is no sleep tracking though.
The Android Wear 2.0 OS gives you direct access to apps in Google Play, you can stream music directly to the watch through Google Play Music, have access to Google Assistant and more.
You can easily change the watch faces with a simple swipe and customize them by adding little widgets or ‘complications’ (calendar, alarm, etc.).
With a 40% increase in the battery life, compared to the previous model, the Huawei Watch 2 seats pretty well. The 420mAh will last about 2 days on a single charge. The non 4G version will last even more.
Overall, we think the Huawei Watch 2 is a complex smartwatch that offers almost all the tools you need. It is not the best looking watch out there and some might find it a bit ‘cheap’ in design, but it does compensate with its large number of features.
On Amazon the Huawei Watch 2 goes for approx. $230. You can also buy the Classic version of the watch, which is more expensive ($295 for the Classic Brown model).
