Sweet Home 3D is an easy to use, simple home design software best used for creating simple sketches or rough plans. Although it might be missing some more advanced features other software in our top ten list have, this app is still a very good designing solution for beginner users who might feel overwhelmed by a more sophisticated software.
The Basics
If you don’t have the know-how to create a floor plan from scratch, this 3D home design software lets you download a sample plan from the online gallery or you can import a sketch, but you can only use it as a background image without the option of tracing or editing.
Sweet Home 3D prides itself with its easy drag-and-drop feature that lets you choose which items you’d like to add to your design and then simply drag them into the 2D view plan. All objects you add can be fully customized to fit your design. The app also has an added convenience of allowing you to see the 3D view simultaneously with the 2D plan through a split screen. This means that once you add an object to the floor plan you’ll be able to view it in both available views at the same time. This is an excellent commodity since it gives you a more complete overview of the objects added. The split screen view also prevents the interloping of the two options, so if you switched from a 2D view, it would seem as if you were hovering over your design in 3D. This feature lets you get a clearer picture of how your finished design will look.
Interior and Landscape Design
Although it has an objects library with a few more than 100 items and around 25 different vegetation and outside fixtures, if you’re trying to create a simple outline you’d like to serve as a guide to what you want, this number should be enough. As you create rooms, you can drag and drop these items, changing them along the way to best fit their particular purpose. Since this home design app is missing a roofing wizard, it’s best used for outlining what you’d like to see on your final plan.
Sweet Home 3D has a very limited offer of landscaping tools. Although you can create fences, decks and patios, you won’t have much help in doing so. While many other similar apps have wizards and step-by-step guides to help you with this process, this software doesn’t. For instance, if you’d like to design a fence, instead of having the fencing wizard set it up for you, you’ll have to manually place each pole individually and then customize it further if you see the need. There are some sample fence designs you can choose from, but the number is very limited and there is a great chance you won’t find what you’re looking for. You can also use Sweet Home 3D to design a deck for your home. Unlike the fencing solution, designing a deck is much like designing a room, easy and without any unnecessary details.

Although it’s a very small, basic home design app, we decided to include Sweet Home 3D in our review because it’s simple enough to use and it covers all the elementary features we looked for in our review. Since it doesn’t have complex advanced features such as some other top tier software on our list, it’s very easy to navigate around and it’s much more accessible for beginner users and those looking to make simple projects quickly.
