BullGuard Antivirus is a powerful anti-malware software with amazing deep-scanning capabilities and many intuitive features. Even though it lacks some essentials, it allows you to secure up to three devices and it has many tools to complete your online protection. It got a lower score on the usability test, but it performed very well protection and performance wise.
BullGuard Antivirus provides sufficient protection against most new malware types such as viruses, Trojans, keyloggers, spyware etc. You can add up to three devices under one license for just under $30. Unfortunately it’s lacking some basic features we looked at during our review.
BullGuard prides itself in being a “robust protector” of your system’s data. The antivirus scans your files in great detail thanks to its dual-engine characteristics. BullGuard Antivirus uses the latest behavioral detection technology and combines it with a more traditional signature-based detection system for a more thorough approach. A much simpler, yet equally effective technology was used for an anti-spam filter that scans your incoming mail and instantly blocks any unwanted mail. BullGuard installs surprisingly quickly without much intervention. The app design is simple and clear so that even the not so tech savvy users can still find their way around easily.
To be sure you’re visiting the site you initially clicked on, BullGuard developed the Safe Browsing feature that classifies the website in your search results by their online reputation. Another online safety feature is the Unwanted app tool that stops you from downloading programs that change your home page or your default browser. Although these seem like minor problems next to Trojans or keyloggers, having to change your homepage/search engine every time you open your web browser can be very annoying.
BullGuard was tested together with 21 other anti-malware programs for protection, performance and usability by the independent test lab AV-Test. The latest evaluations were done during the winter months of 2016 on standard and high-end PCs. BullGuard performed above the industry standard for protection and performance, with a lower score for usability.
On the most important part of the evaluation, the protection test, BullGuard performed slightly above the industry average. It managed to successfully defend its host PC from more than 13.000 newly discovered malware, and it fought off 174 samples causing 0-day attacks. The performance score measured the strain the anti-malware software produced on its host PC. BullGuard was much faster than the industry average score in all tests except while the testers were installing frequently used apps. Its overall performance score was still very good. The usability test was designed to monitor and record how many mistakes an anti-malware software makes when differentiating between legitimate and threatening apps/files/websites. AV-Test recorded BullGuard mistakenly registered five false-positives while the industry average was zero.
