PROS:
CONS:
Aside from its slightly steep price, the Patagonia 850 Down 19F is a really high-quaality 3-season sleeping bag. It is wide and comfortable, very warm thanks to its 850 goose down and it is also environmentally friendly.
Patagonia Inc. is an outdoor equipment company based in California. It was founded in 1973. It currently manufactures outdoor clothing, backpacks, laptop bags, travel bags, sleeping bags and more.
The Patagonia 850 Down sleeping bag comes in 2 models: the 19 Fahrenheit sleeping bag that we focused on in this review and the 30 F sleeping bag. They both come in 3 sizes: regular, short and long. The 19F model is their flagship.
Here are the main specifications for the 850 Down 19F sleeping bag:
The Patagonia 850 Down 19F comes in two colors: orange and blue. It has a mummy design and the zipper is positioned in the center, is full length and has 3 sliders so that you can create an opening in any part of the bag, if you feel too warm and need some ventilation. The fact that it is positioned in the center is a good thing because you can find it and access it easier in the dark and it also doesn’t get caught in the fabric as often as side zipers.
The hood is not very large, it is comfortable and lightweight and it can be cinched down tightly to keep you warm.
Of all the aspects regarding the design of the 850 Down bag, we have to say we liked the foot box best. The foot box is carefully designed to eliminate any dead spaces and keep your feet warm, while still being roomy enough so that you can move your feet freely. The shell and liner are differentially cut, which also helps in keeping you warm.
The baffles are ingeniously designed so that insulation can spread evenly throughout the entire bag, without getting trapped into all the channels, as it is the case with lots of other sleeping bags.
When it comes to comfort, the 850 Down is really comfortable and roomy, having a wider cut than other mummy bags. You’ve got a large foot box, enough width on the shoulders and your knees. The only thing that’s missing and would have come in handy is a small pocket inside, for storing your small belongings.
The sleeping bag comes with 2 sacks: a stuff sack and a storage bag (drawstring-bag made of a blend of organic cotton and hemp). The stuff sack has 2 pull tabs, which allows you to compress the sack and make it really small and easy to carry.
In terms of durability, although Patagonia uses premium materials and components, especially on its flagships (such as this one), you do have to pay attention with the 850 Down. Its shell and liner materials are lightweight and while that’s a good thing as far as weight goes, the bag might tear if not properly cared for it. So if you want to enjoy it for as many years as possible, make sure you protect it from rocks and harsh environments in general.
The 850 Down is a really warm bag and its 850 goose fill power is AGTD (Advanced Global Traceable Down) certified by NFS International, being an environmentally friendly sleeping bag. It really rises to the expectations and can cope really well with lower temperatures. You’ll only need additional layers if you go below 20 degrees, which means the temperature rating of the 850 Down is quite accurate.
The Patagonia 850 Down 19F is definitely a premium sleeping bag, with a roomy and comfortable design and quality materials and fill. Its only real downside would have to be its price.
The regular sized Patagonia 850 Down 19F goes for $499. If you opt for the short version, you have to pay $479 and the long sized bag can be purchased for $519. Regardless of the size you choose, the sleeping bag comes with a stuff sack and a drawstring-bag for long term storage. The drawstring bag is made of 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton.
