The REI Co-Op Magma 10 And Magma 17 are manufactured by REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.), an American corporation with an impressive experience in this field. REI was founded in 1938 in Seattle, Washington, as a cooperative meant to offer good quality but affordable climbing equipment. REI currently has over 150 retail stores in 36 states. If you become a lifetime member of REI, for a $20 fee, you get lots of benefits and a percentage of the yearly profits. REI offers a wide range of products, from camping and hiking gear, to cycling, running, yoga and more.

Magma 10 is the Men version of the sleeping bag, while Magma 17 is designed for women. They are especially tailored for camping and hiking. The sleeping bags managed to check all the important boxes: quality, warmth and affordability. The Magma bags are mummy shaped, have a 850-fill, DWR-treated goose down and a comfort rating of 22 degrees F (lower limit 10 degrees) for Magma 10 and 17 degrees F (lower limit: 3 degrees F) for Magma 17. The bag for women is warmer, because it is well known that women need a higher temperature than men and they get cold faster. The materials in them are RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certified.

Magma 10 and Magma 17 are not the warmest sleeping bags in their temperature range, but they are the most affordable and they manage to do a decent job. You should have no problem with them in all the seasons. They can also work in winter, but only in milder temperatures (preferably not colder than 20 degrees).  

Both sleeping bags come in regular size and long. Magma 17 weighs 2,4 pounds (the regular sleeping bag) and 2, 6 pounds (the long one).

Magma 10 weighs 1,4 pounds (regular) and 2 pounds (long).Because they are so light, they are suited for backpacking, as they are easy to pack.

They both come with a storage sack and a stuff sack.

The sleeping bags could be seen as a bit pricey, at $349/sleeping bag, but given the overall quality and features, could be considered quite affordable. One important quality that we have to stress is the 850-fill water resistant down. Sleeping bags with these characteristics usually cost around $100 more, so these models are a real bargain.

Although they are mummy shaped, The Magma 10 and Magma 17 are roomy enough so that you can move your legs inside them. They are very comfy and fluffy, the hood is very well designed and adjustable, there is an inner zipper that can also be opened from the bottom, if you just want some ventilation. The zipper has a pull tab that glows in the dark so you can see it during the night.
