SUMMARY:

The Philips Fidelio X2 are a great choice for people who want a high-quality pair of headphones mainly for home/indoor use. They are open back, which means there’s little isolation and quite a high amount of sound leakage, but the X2 compensate through a very clear, warm, detailed and spacious sound. They are comfortable to wear and overall, a great value for the money.

Design

The Fidelio X2 model from Philips is an upgrade to the X1 headphones, launched in 2012. Although they don’t differ too much in design from the X1, there are several adjustments made to the Fidelio X2, which place this model on top of its predecessor.

The Fidelio X2 are open-back, over ear headphones. Open-back headphones aren’t preferred by everyone, because even though they are capable of delivering a fantastic sound quality, they leak sound. That means others can hear what you are listening to. That is why they are better suited for home use, where you can enjoy your privacy without bothering others around you or be bothered by outside noise.

Here are the main specifications of the Fidelio X2:

  • Dimensions: (D x H x W): 11 x 23 x 19 cm
  • Weight: 0.38 kg
  • Frequency response: 50 – 40,000 Hz
  • Impedance: 30 Ohm
  • Sensitivity: 100dB at 1mW
  • Distortion: <0.1% THD
  • Speaker diameter: 50mm
  • 3m detachable Oxygen free cable
  • Maximum power input: 500 mW

The new Fidelio X2 come with new 50 mm neodymium drivers, a larger calf leather headband, a hammock underneath it, replaceable cloth-covered ear pads with deluxe memory foam and an approx. 10 feet long detachable cable, which is also covered with fabric. The Fidelio X2 are a bit big and weighty, but extremely comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The velour and the memory foam in the ear-pads are breathable so you won’t feel your head/ears heating up when wearing the headphones for extended periods. Also, the speaker plates are oriented to a 15-degree angle following the shape of your ear, which means music will hit you straight into the ear. The headband might feel a bit too large for people with smaller heads, but big-headed audiophiles will certainly appreciate it.

Sound quality

As we’ve already mentioned it, the open-back headphones are not for everyone. They can be annoying to wear outside or at the office where all your co-workers can hear everything you play, but on the other hand, this type of design can really enhance sound quality, so it is up to you to decide if it’s worth investing in them or not. The cable is also quite long to be dragged around outside or on the bus, there is no noise cancelling and isolation is not really the best with the Fidelio X2. However, the open-back architecture of the Fidelio X2 helps eliminating the air-pressure and lets the diaphragm move more freely, which translates into smoother mids and high frequencies and a more transparent sound. So if you are just about high audio quality, in the comfort of your home, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t go with the Fidelio X2.

The X2 headphones are definitely high resolution, as Philips boasts on its website. The headphones deliver a balanced, detailed and warm sound, with clear mids and smoothed high frequencies. For some people, the bass might sound a little too pronounced and the highs could be more present, but overall, the X2 manage to offer a close to neutral sound, rich, warm, clear and spacious.

Pricing

You can buy the Philips Fidelio X2 for approximately $300.
