SUMMARY:

The Bowers & Wilkins P9 headphones are a deluxe model, definitely not conceived for the ordinary consumer. They are extremely well built, with an impressive attention to detail, both in terms of design and sound quality. They sound exceptional, but they come at a price that not everybody is willing to pay.

COMPLETE REVIEW

The P9 headphones are manufactured by Bowers & Wilkins, a British company based in West Sussex, England. The company was founded in 1976 and it is renowned especially for its loudspeakers, but other audio products as well.

The P9 headphones are not for every pocket. They’re a luxury piece of equipment, with an exquisite design and an astonishing sound quality. They are corded, over-ear and with a closed-back.

Everything about them spells quality and class, including their steep price (around $900).

Main specifications:

  • Drive units: 2 x 40mm
  • Weight: 413g
  • Frequency range: 2 Hz – 30kHz
  • Impedance: 22 ohms
  • Sensitivity: 111dB/V at 1kHz
  • 5mm stereo jack

The P9 are foldable, have a detachable cable and changeable ear cushions. With the P9 is love at first sight. You can see right away that they’re built with style and taste and an impressive attention to detail, even when it comes to the carrying case, which is dressed in Alcantara. It is no wonder these are the most expensive headphones they manufacture.

They headphones have an aluminum headband with memory foam and covered in brown Italian Saffiano leather and the ear cushions (also with memory foam) are changeable. The P9s are a bit heavy, due to the materials used, but they are solid and durable and their collapsible design makes them easy enough to store and carry. They are pretty comfortable, although to be fair, not equally for every head. People with smaller heads or who wear glasses may have a harder time with them. Also, after longer periods with the P9 on, your ears might get a little hot, literally.

The drive units in the headphones are angled (15 degrees) to provide a better, more natural listening experience. The ear cups are decoupled from the headband, to reduce unwanted vibrations that could lead do distortion or an overall bad sound quality.

There are no fancy features such as wireless connectivity, noise cancellation and Google Assistant with the P9. Bowers and Wilkins focused on a task and one task only: to make these headphones look and sound extraordinary. And they’ve delivered. Their attention to details is also noticeable when it comes to sound quality. The P9 have a detailed sound, you can hear every element and instrument perfectly separated from the others and you hear exactly what was recorded. This could be a problem of course if you play poorly recorded music, because the P9 will play it accurately. They have just the perfect amount of bass, mids and highs. Everything is dynamic, present and crystal clear.

The mini-remote on one of the cables has 3 buttons that let you control the basic functions (volume, calls) and a built-in microphone, that allows you to take calls.

There’s not much to dislike about the P9 headphones, except maybe for the steep price. Audiophiles won’t be disappointed by the sound quality of the P9, their exquisite design and sturdy construction. However, major competitors manage to get closer with every model, in terms of audio quality and many of them are also wireless headsets, with smart features and a more affordable price. The P9 on the other hand are suited for a smaller segment, a more pretentious and definitely wealthier one.

Pricing

The P9 headphones are not affordable. Their price on both the official website and Amazon is $900. In the box you get the beautifully crafted Alcantara case, the headphones, two 4 feet cables (one with a remote with 3 buttons) and another really long cable, for home use.
