SUMMARY:

The X900F is a solid choice when it comes to mid-priced 4K TVs. It has an impressive image quality right out of the box and a high contrast ratio, it is among the brightest LED TVs out there and the Android TV platform is very complex. Aside from some minor flaws, there are really no important shortcomings or failings to be mentioned.

COMPLETE REVIEW

The X900F from Sony was released in 2018 and it is not the most affordable 4K TV you can find, especially if you are aiming for a bigger size, like the 65-inch version reviewed by us. But it is a solid choice, as it has a great image quality and HDR performance and it is impressively bright (maybe among the first in its range).

The X900F comes in five sizes: 49-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch and 85-inch.

Here are the main specifications of the 65-inch version:

  • Dimensions with the stand (W x H x D): 57 x 35 3/8 x 11 ¾ in
  • Weight with stand: 56.2 lb.
  • Resolution: 3840 x 2160
  • Backlight type: direct LED
  • Local dimming
  • HDR10/HLG
  • On-board storage: 16GB
  • Voice search
  • Operating system: Android
  • Motion enhancer: X-Motion Clarity
  • 2 USB ports
  • 4 HDMI inputs
  • 1 Ethernet
  • WiFi, Bluetooth (4.1)

Design

The design of the Sony X900F is beautiful. It has a thin, aluminum frame around the screen, a stand with two feet which are L-shaped and quite large actually. They also have a wide angle so you need a hefty piece of furniture to place the X900F on. The stand can also manage cables, some of them can be hidden in the stand.

There are two niches for the connections: a HDMI port, 2 USB ports and the 3.5 mm ones (for headphones, component video in, infrared) on one and 3 more HDMI inputs, another USB port (this one is 3.0), optical audio output, 1 Ethernet, antenna connection in the other recess.

The TV comes with a traditionally-looking remote control. Among others, there is also a button for Google Assistant on the remote.

Features and performance

The X900F comes with the Android TV platform for using the streaming services, apps and so on. It is very complex and you can download a plethora of apps from Google Play. You’ve got your Hulu, Netflix, Google Play Music & Movies & TV, YouTube, iHeartRadio, Pandora and more.

As mentioned above, the X900F works with Google Assistant which can be enabled directly from the remote control and it is very useful for various purposes: to search shows and other media, check the weather, switch between apps and more. The assistant works great and it is highly capable.

While the interface is very complex and you pretty much have everything you need, it does have its bugs and sometimes apps will crash from time to time. It is no general rule though.

The X900F supports both HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) and Dolby Vision for online content.

The image quality of the Sony X900F is quite impressive. It has a great native contrast ratio, accurate colors, this TV is one of the brightest one you’ll see in this range and the local dimming feature is also satisfactory, actually better than in most LED TVs. The SDR peak brightness is impressive and you’ll have no problems when watching the X900F in bright conditions. In dark conditions the image is even more remarkable, with deep blacks. Reflections are not an issue either with the X900F, thanks to its anti-reflective coating, and unless you are really dealing with harsh, direct sunlight, you’ll have no problem.

Unfortunately, when it comes to viewing angle, the X900F is not that extraordinary, with the best results obtained only when you are positioned right in front of the TV.

The refresh rate on the 65-inch version is 120 Hz, so you’ve got a low motion blur and you’ve also got Precision Clarity, which helps increasing motion resolution by only applying black frame insertion only where necessary.

Those considering the X900F for gaming purposes should know that the input lag is average with the X900F.

Sound-wise, the X900F is clear and powerful enough, although it is a bit soft on the bass side. It has 2 speakers of 10W which can deliver a decent but not full sound. If you don’t want to invest in a dedicated soundbar, at least consider adding a subwoofer.

There are many things about the Sony X900F that make it a competitive product and one of the best in its range. It has a plethora of features and available apps thanks to the Android TV platform and image quality is in many ways outstanding.

Pricing

The Sony X900F (65-inch) costs approximately $1,800. In the box you also get the AC power cord, the voice remote control, batteries, an IR Blaster, a table top stand and the setup guide and instructions.
