COMPLETE REVIEW

Coleman Inc. is not exactly new to this whole camping lantern thing. The company has been around since 1900 and it has several popular models on the market when it comes to lighting devices.

The Coleman Quad LED has a power of 190 lumens, it is battery powered and consists of four panels, which are all detachable.

Here are the main specs of the Coleman Quad LED:

  • Dimensions (W X H): 6.5 x 11.7 inches
  • Weight: 6.15 lbs (with batteries)
  • Power: 190 lumens; 47.5/panel
  • Beam distance: 8m
  • 4 removable light panels
  • Runtime: 75 hours (lantern); 1.5 hours/panel;
  • Requires 8 D-cell batteries
  • IPX4 rated

Design

The Coleman Quad LED is called like that because it consists of 4 detachable panels. Each of them has 6 LEDs, which means a total of 24 LEDs for the whole lantern.

The Coleman Quad LED is basically 5 lanterns in one. It can be used as a whole or as 4 separate lanterns. It has a base that runs on 8 D-cell batteries and acts as a charge dock. Attached to it there are 4 detachable panels. Each of them has 6 LEDs and a switch and you can remove them all or just one, two or three, according to your needs. The panels act as individual lanterns, too. If you let the panels attached to the base, you’ve got one lantern, or you can have 4 separate ones, if you detach the panels. The panels can easily be detached through the release button positioned on the front.

The Quad LED looks a bit bulky and is not the lightest lantern out there, given that it uses no less than 8 D-cell batteries. It’s not the smallest one either, so if your storage space in your backpack is limited, you might want to consider a different device, a smaller and maybe a collapsible one.

The lantern is made mainly of plastic, has a larger handle on the base and carrying handles on each of the 4 panels.

There is a main switch on the base, to turn the whole lantern on and off and an on/off switch on each of the four panels.

How it works

The Quad LED is as straightforward as it gets. You just switch the lantern on and off or detach whichever panel you want to use separately and that’s it. There are no modes, no dimming options, no strobe/flashing mode.

The whole lantern produces 190 lumens in a 360 degree light. Each panel will put out 47.5 lumens. The range for both the whole lantern and for each of the panels, is 26 feet.

The main base acts as a charging dock for the 4 panels. It uses 8 D-cell batteries and when you use the lantern as a whole, it has a runtime of up to 75 hours. Each panel can be used as an independent lantern when detached and has a runtime of approximately 1.5 hours. The panels are powered by 3 AAA NiMH (rechargeable) batteries, which are included with the Quad LED. When you connect the panels back to the base, they will recharge from the D-cell batteries. The 8 D-cell batteries are not included in the package.

The Coleman Quad LED is only IPX4 rated, meaning it is only splash proof. You can’t submerge it in water and it can’t cope with heavy water jets either.

In conclusion, the Coleman Quad LED is a useful lantern thanks to its special design. The fact that it has 4 detachable panels means you basically have 5 lanterns instead of just one, which is a big plus. The fact that the panels use rechargeable batteries is another good thing about it. However, the Quad LED is a bit pricey, considering that it is really minimalist, doesn’t have modes and it is not waterproof either. Also, it is quite large and heavy, so it is not for every backpacker.

Pricing

The Coleman Quad LED has a price of $65. The 8 D-cell batteries required are NOT included in the package.
