With more than two billion installations, CCleaner is probably the most wide spread registry repair software on the market. Our tests concluded that it did cause a slight overall improvement to the entire system, while minimally slowing down the video chat quality. It has great additional features that are automated so even novice users can use them without much thought.
CCleaner is one of the best know registry repair software around the world. Its free version has had more than two billion downloads and has proved to be a reliable system optimizer. For the purpose of our review, we looked at the paid version - CCleaner Professional that comes with a few additional utilities.
CCleaner Professional is a registry repair app with great ease of use. Its main window is designed in its recognizable blue and grey pattern, with all options clearly marked and stacked on the side. The right side is reserved for a more detailed view of the process you started. CCleaner’s startup optimizer automatically prioritizes apps which rise together with your system. Also automated, the app updates itself once a month so you don’t have to worry about not having the latest version installed. CCleaner scans your browser when it’s idle and cleans your history and cookies. You can also schedule sweeps to prevent unnecessary junk files from cluttering up your system.
CCleaner standardly goes for $24.95 with a trial period of 14 days. When you decide to buy, you are presented with a few other well-known Piriform apps like Recuva and Defragler at a discounted price. You can also order a Backup CD you can use to back up your data to for less than $10.
To evaluate the registry repair software for our review, we tested all products under same conditions on an eight-year-old PC. Since the computer hasn’t had a registry cleanup in quite some time, we thought this would be an extra feat for the tested apps, and also to see how well they perform under extreme conditions. Before running any of the tests, we used a benchmarking software to measure the baseline performance of the test PC. The same thing was done after the registry repair app fixed all Windows registry errors.
Piriform’s registry repair app did a good job at finding and resolving more than 7000 errors in the Windows registry. The measuring software we ran afterwards showed that CCleaner sped up the overall performance of the PC by 4.5 percent which is more than some other products in our line up did. While it did boost the system by almost 5 percent, it actually decreased the speed at which graphics are processed and it lowered the quality of video chat by 0.9 percent. Since any result below 15 percent doesn’t really have an impact on your PC’s performance, CCleaner scored an average result on the performance test. Although all registry cleaners claim they will boost and improve your system, in reality, they are best used to clean up the Windows registry of any potentially harmful errors without any realistic expectation of a performance improvement.
