COMPLETE REVIEW

Big Agnes is an American outdoor equipment company based in Colorado. It has over 18 years of experience when it comes to outdoor gear and it commercializes tents, sleeping pads and sleeping bags, camp furniture and more.

One of their best-selling backpacking tents is the Copper Spur HV UL2, which is not a cheap tent, but more of a premium model. In terms of price, it is a mid-range item but one that justifies its cost.

The tent comes in 2 available colors: green and orange and it is a 3-season tent. The HV UL2 is a two-person model and it has the following specifications:

  • Packed weight: 3lb 1 oz
  • Fast Fly weight: 2 lb 2 oz
  • Footprint weight: 6 oz
  • Packed size: 4” x 19.5”
  • Floor: 29 square feet; floor material: silicone-treated double ripstop nylon with waterproof PU coating (1200 mm)
  • Head height: 40”
  • Vestibule area: 9/9 square feet
  • 2 doors
  • 2 vestibules
  • 2 DAC Featherlite NFL and NSL poles
  • 8 aluminum J stakes
  • 3 mesh pockets
  • Body/mesh material: proprietary random rip-stop pattern nylon

The Big Agnes Copper Spur is an ultralight tent, perfect for backpacking, yet durable and spacious enough to not compromise your comfort. It has a great space to weight ratio and is really easy to pack.

It is a freestanding tent and while it is ultralight, it is also solid and built using high-quality, durable materials, up to 25% stronger, according to their claims. Both its floor and the fly are made of a proprietary material which is silicone treated and have a 1200mm waterproof polyurethane coating. This tent is a 3-season tent and can cope with almost any conditions, even light snow. Except for harsh winters, you can rely on this tent for any other weather scenarios/season.

Thanks to its shape and the 4-way high volume hub pole design, the Copper Spur is more spacious than other similar competitors. You’ve got more headroom thanks to the vertical walls and the tent also comes with two doors and two vestibules. It is really comfortable for two people and their gear and what doesn’t fit in with you can be stored in the vestibules. It is tall enough so that you can sit up in it, with a 40” height at the peak.

The Copper Spur is easy to set up, the poles and corners are color coordinated and basically all you have to stake are the vestibules, which are on the side. Other than that, once you pitch your tent, you can even grab it all and just place it somewhere else without messing up anything, as it is indeed freestanding. You also get 8 aluminum J stakes, which are also very light. The footprint is sold separately and if you prefer, you can just set up the footprint with the poles and leave the body, to reduce your weight even more.

The guy lines are reflective which makes it more visible during the night.

Not only is this tent spacious, it also comes with 3 generous interior pockets for storage. They are mesh pockets, a long one into the roof of the tent and 2 more in front of the two doors of the tent. Additionally, you can also store things in the two vestibules. Each measures 9 square feet.

Ventilation is also great due to the top vent on the fly, with Velcro that allows you to open and close it according to your needs. The mesh is also breathable and the double walls help, too. Overall, air circulation is really good.

The zippers on the fly can snag from time to time if you don’t handle them carefully, especially when they are wet. If you take your time with them though and you are using both your hands, you shouldn’t encounter any problems.

Overall, we were very pleased with the Big Agnes Copper Spur. It is definitely a great piece of equipment, reliable, comfortable, extremely easy to set up and take down.

Pricing

On the Big Agnes official website, the Copper Spur HV UL2 goes for $450.
