PROS:
CONS:
Regardless of how you look at it, the Hilleberg Niak is a premium tent in all its aspects. It is the most beautifully and flawlessly built tent we’ve reviewed so far. The high quality materials and design make it one of the most durable tents on the market. It also behaves superbly in heavy rain, strong winds and bad weather in general. No amount of water can penetrate its Kerlon 1000, completely waterproof nylon. The only ‘drawback’ we could really find with the Niak was its steep price, but we can guarantee you’ll get your money’s worth.
The Hilleberg Niak tent is manufactured by Hilleberg, a Swedish company founded in 1971. The first commercial tent with a connected inner and outer was produced only two years later, in 1973.
Hilleberg is currently a very competitive tent producer and makes some of the most lightweight, high quality and durable tents you can find on the market. They also have an American division based in Seattle Washington.
The Hilleberg Niak can be seen either as a 3 season/2 person or 1 person premium expedition tent. While two people can fit in it, a single person could be really comfortable in it and also have more than enough room for their gear. Hilleberg describes it as an ideal choice for a parent/child, person/dog or for a ‘solo’ camper. So you really can think of it as being ideal for ‘a person and a half’.
The tent comes in three available colors: red, green or sand.
Specifications:
The Niak is a double-wall, dome-shaped tent, which ensures a better breathability and comes with a waterproof outer. It has one door and a front vestibule. Unlike other tents that claim to be waterproof but can’t really take a heavy storm, the Niak’s floor has a 12.000 mm hydrostatic head, unlike the most commonly found values of just 1.500 mm. What that means is that this tent is extremely reliable even in the most torrential rains and it will succeed in keeping you dry regardless of the conditions.
Setting up the Niak is an easy job. This freestanding model with its two crossover poles can be installed within 5 minutes. If the weather requires it, you can always use its guying and pegging points. In order to fully anchor the tent and make it as stable as it can get, you need 8 to 10 stakes.
Regarding its durability, rest assured that this tent is built like a tank. As we’ve already mentioned and it is also reflected in its price, the Hilleberg Niak is a premium tent, which is built to last. The 20-denier nylon is considerably stronger than regular nylon and regardless of the harsh conditions and abuse, this tent is pretty much impossible to break.
Hilleberg’s main concerns are quality, durability and simplicity. There’s nothing too fancy in its design, everything is simple but efficient.
With the Hilleberg Niak you can opt for one of the 2 inner tents: the solid walls one or the full mesh. The latter will ensure a better ventilation and keep condensation to a minimum. However, even with the other option, you will only experience low to moderate condensation and only on the exterior. There will be no dampness inside. The door is very large and when left open, you’ll get plenty of air and a wide, beautiful view.
The best deal you’ll get for the Hilleberg Niak is on Amazon, where you can find it at $795.
