COMPLETE REVIEW

SpiderOak is a cloud data backup service.  It started building no knowledge software eleven years ago, and ever since, the company is guided by the policy that only you should have access to the data you entrust them to store. They advocate absolute privacy during data transfer and storage, guaranteeing end-to-end encryption at all times. SpiderOak offers storage options from 2GB to 5TB on as many devices as you own. In order to rank the best online backup services on the market we analyzed 30 different cloud data backup services for their overall value for smaller and larger families, as well as individual users. During our comparison, some services proved to be too expensive for our consumer groups so we narrowed the list to the top ten best online backup service currently available.

Value for money

SpiderOak One backup offers three different storage plans ranging from 2GB to 5TB. You’re also entitled to try the service for 21 days before committing to any subscription. We focused our attention to the 1TB plan priced at just under $130/year for an unlimited number of devices. With the price of over $100, SpiderOak One received a B- for its value for families that have up to five computers. With the price of $26/computer, the service has an average value for money. For families with three computers, the price goes up to $43/computer annually, and its overall grade for smaller family falls to an average C.  For an individual user, SpiderOak One got a higher mark of B- because it costs $129/computer per year. Comparably to the other top products in our review, this is still a considerable amount of money for 1TB of storage.

Features

Unlike some other online backup services we reviewed, SpiderOak One offers unlimited file versioning, which means you can access and restore any file no matter the date it was first created. Another useful feature is a sharing folder - SpiderOak Hive that allows you to automatically sync and share files with other people you previously authorized.

Performance

Backup

One of the most important aspects of any cloud data backup service is the speed at which it backs up your files. We tested SpiderOak One by calculating an average MB/min speed it took for 1TB of data to transfer to SpiderOak servers. For a more realistic result, we performed the tests during different hours of the weekdays and over the weekend when traffic is busiest. The desktop app took an average of 18 days to transfer 1TB of data. This result is still better than the industry average of 21 days so SpiderOak One received a C+ in this area of the test. The desktop app itself is fairly easy to use. Even though it’s not as intuitive as some other top tier applications, it still guides you through the backup process without much room for you to make a mistake. The main icons are clearly marked and can be accessed easily.

Restoration

For file-restoration purposes, SpiderOak proved to be one of the fastest, most reliable services we tested. It took around 2.5 days to retrieve 1TB of data from SpiderOak’s servers. We came to this result after extensive tests run at different hours of day/night to get the average MB/min speed at which 1TB of files would successfully restore to your PC. SpiderOak One’s impressive result is even more stunning when we consider it was almost two times faster than the service with the second fastest restore speed. The desktop app performed average as it did during the backup process. The absence of a clearly labeled “restore files” option gave SpiderOak a C+ for the usability of its desktop app.

Protection

Security and protection of the data you store on SpiderOak One’s servers is the company’s top priority. All of their subscriptions are marketed under the strict “no knowledge” policy which states that only you have access to your files. Once you set upon transferring your files to SpiderOak, your data will be secured with the 256-bit encryption for which you will be given the sole encryption key. Forgetting the password you tied to your encryption key would leave you locked out of your data so consider downloading a third-party password manager to protect your most sensitive personal files. However, for some reason, the software developers decided not to include the two step verification into your login process, so that might be a slight weakness in the security of your account.

SpiderOak One online backup service produced the fastest results in our file restoration test. It was twice as fast as the second fastest service. It got an average result for its backup properties. SpiderOak provides one of the highest safety standards in our review with their “no knowledge” policy.
