SOS Online Backup did well in both the backup and file restoration tests. It recorded above average speeds for both features, although starting the processes is a bit tricky because the desktop app requires multiple steps in order to run them. The online data backup service also received a very poor grade for its value for money, since its basic 1TB plan costs $399.99 annually for up to five PCs.
SOS Online Backup is a cloud data backup service that prides itself in being the “world’s most secure backup”. It uses multiple layers of encryption in order to make sure you are the only one that has access to the files you store on their servers. We performed extensive tests to measure the backup/restoration speeds and SOS Online Backup showed above average results. Unfortunately, because it’s the most expensive service in our review, it received a very poor mark for its overall value.
Value for money
SOS Online Backup takes the title of the costliest online data backup service we reviewed. So far we have evaluated the overall value of a service based on how expensive it is for small/large families and individuals to store 1TB of data. For its private users there are several SOS Personal plans that range from 50GB-10TB. The optimal 1TB option we looked at covers up to five PCs and Macs, and it goes for $399.99 per year. This would make the price per computer $40 annually which is more than some other services charge for unlimited storage.
Features
The service is one of the few that has an unlimited file versioning feature included in its basic plan. This feature allows you to access any file version you previously made at any point since its creation. SOS Online Backup is also a “true archive” service which means that they keep your files forever, even when you delete the originally backed up file on your device. You can also transfer bulky files without an extra charge.

Backup
SOS Online Backup scored highly in our backup speed tests. We ran several backup sets during different weekdays to get the most optimal result and measure the average MB/min speed for transferring 1TB of data. The service managed to finish the transfer in just under seven days making it one of the fastest backup processes in our review. Even though the desktop app isn’t too difficult to use for an everyday user, a less tech savvy person might have some difficulty commencing the backup process on their own.
Restoration
The data restoration speed was a little bit slower than the backup process, but it was still well above the industry average. Using the average MB/min rate for restoring 1TB of data, SOS Online Backup finished the job in about 10 days. Even though the fastest speed in our review was just over four days, this is still a very good result. As with the backup process, the desktop app isn’t too user friendly when it comes to initiating the file restoration either. It can take up to 11 steps to start the restore process which is more than enough for a novice user to get confused.
Protection
As we mentioned previously, SOS Online Backup prides itself in being the “world’s most secure backup”. To receive this title, the service meticulously controls when, who and how your data is being viewed. It encrypts your files with a military grade multilayer encryption (three-layer 256-bit AES) and it does so in all three steps of the transfer and storage process. To fulfill their promise of providing your files with absolute privacy, SOS Online Backup allows you to create a personalized encryption key. This advanced security feature allows you to be completely sure that there can’t be any unauthorized access to your files since the encryption key stays on your PC. On the downside, if you forget your assigned key, you can never access your files again since the service doesn’t provide a spare.
The online data backup service performed above average on the backup/restoration speed tests we performed. It has one of the highest security protocols in our review which makes it one of the most secure online data backup services in the industry.
