Can you use a VPN on your PlayStation?

VPNs are meant to secure your Internet connection, regardless of the device you’re using to get online. All good VPN providers offer VPN support not just for computers and laptops, but also for smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, routers and more.

Why should you use a VPN for your gaming console?

Well, the first and most important reason is the one we’ve just mentioned above. A VPN will secure your connection and keep your privacy intact while you are playing online. Hackers and other snoopers can still harm you even if you are using a PlayStation, as long as you are connected to the Internet.

Another reason why you should use a VPN with your PlayStation is to stop your Internet provider from throttling your bandwidth.

How to set up a VPN for your PlayStation

Installing a VPN on your PlayStation is not as easy as setting up a VPN on your smartphone for instance, because for PS there are no available apps. There is no direct support for PlayStation. However, it is still possible, and we’ll let you know how to do that.

There are 2 ways in which you can use a VPN with your PlayStation. You can either install the VPN on your router or on your computer, be it Windows or Mac.

Installing a VPN on a router

In order to install a VPN on your WiFi router, the easiest way is to have a router that has built-in VPN access. Those kinds of routers are a little pricier, so be prepared or that (for instance, ExpressVPN is a VPN provider that offers that kind of equipment). Another option is to get the VPN subscription and install the VPN manually on your WiFi router. The process differs from VPN provider to VPN provider and from router to router, but there are usually tutorials on how to do it.

How to set up a VPN on your Windows computer

In order to set up a VPN on your Windows PC, you first have to get a VPN subscription. You install the VPN on the computer and you’ll need an Ethernet cable, to connect the PS to the computer.

Then, you have to go to Control Panel – Network Sharing Center – Change Adaptor Settings. Go to the VPN icon – Properties and open the Sharing tab. Make sure you select the ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’.  The next step is to go to your Home Networking Connection, find and select your Internet connection from the list, to share it with your PlayStation.

The last step is to go to your PlayStation settings and select Network Settings – Set Up Internet Connection – Use a LAN cable and choose ‘Easy’ for the connection method. Click on ‘Do not use a proxy server’ and you’re done.

How to set up a VPN on your Mac computer

In order to set up a VPN on your Mac, you also need a VPN subscription, an Ethernet cable and for your Mac computer or laptop to have a WiFi adapter.

You start by installing the VPN on your Mac, connect the Mac with your PlayStation using the Ethernet cable and go to System Preferences – Sharing – Internet Sharing – Share your connection from and choose WiFi.

Next, go to ‘To Computers Using’ and Select ‘Ethernet’. Check to share the Internet connection with your PlayStation and make sure the green icon is displayed.

Then you have to open the VPN and connect to your preferred server and the last is similar to the one on PC computers. You go to your PlayStation settings and select Network Settings – Set Up Internet Connection – Use a LAN cable and choose ‘Easy’ for the connection method. Click on ‘Do not use a proxy server’ and that’s it.
