An extended vehicle warranty is a contract that you purchase from a seller separate from the manufacturer, who will then reimburse your vehicle in case of a mechanical breakdown. Even though it is named “warranty”, it is technically not a warranty because you can purchase it any time and is also not defined as one by the federal law.

USAA Extended Vehicle Warranty

USAA is a renowned insurance service that has been around since 1922. They are mostly catered towards their military members. In order to be their customer, you need to be an active member of the Armed Forces, a retired one, or a direct family member of one. This exclusivity makes their services hard to access by most people. However, it also means that they can offer specific benefits which members of the Armed Forces will only get from USAA.

Do they still offer extended warranty?

As of January 2018, USAA has stopped offering extended warranty plans to newer customers. They will only honor the contracts of those who have purchased one before this date. This means that even if you are a member, you will still not be able to purchase one.

What were their former deals?

Back when it was offered, USAA offered two coverage plans that are quite straightforward in its coverage and features.

Their first plan is the Manufacturer Wrap Protection Plan that offers coverage for everything a premium plan does. It is advised for those who own vehicles with a 1,000 mileage.

The second plan is the Comprehensive Protection Plan which is equivalent to the bumper-to-bumper coverage of other extended vehicle warranty providers. This includes the drive axle, transmission, and engine. This is available for those who own cars which have travelled less than 115,000 miles and is not older than 10 years.

It is important to take note their contracts are administered by Assurant Solutions. This means that the contract is not directly related to them as the mentioned company is a third-party. However, this is a common practice with extended vehicle warranty providers which means that it is not particularly bad.

These plans also come with good features that is better suited for active military members. This includes the following:

  • The Deployment Coverage Extension feature gives the user up to 15 months of additional time for their vehicle contracts in case they will be deployed for active service. Upon their return, they can then avail for an additional $45 for their oil change. This is a feature that only USAA offers mainly because of their exclusive membership.
  • They also have a rental car coverage that is more flexible compared to other service providers. With them, you can receive up to $50 per day of using a rental car whenever your own vehicle is being repaired. This has no time limit which is a good feature especially because other service providers only offer up to one or two weeks at most. Others can also only offer up to $30 for reimbursement.

Will there be a new set of plans for USAA?

Currently, USAA has yet to release news that they will be offering extended warranty plans in the future. Only those that has subscribed back then can still enjoy the benefits of the plan.

If you are a member of USAA or someone whose original car manufacturer warranty are ending, you may want to try other services who still actively offers a plan perfect for your vehicle. Some of the recommended brands include Autopom!, Toco Warranty, AAA Auto Protection, and more. These companies all have available contracts that vary in terms of coverage, pricing, and features.
