When you buy a new car you get a certain standard warranty from the manufacturer/dealer. The length of that warranty varies from brand to brand. In the most fortunate cases, you get up to 7, maybe 10 years. But in most cases, the standard warranty only covers you for 3 to 5 years.

Unless you have a fat bank account and you change your car every year or so, you want to know you can rely on your vehicle for as many years as possible. Because let’s face it: most of us keep our car for as long as it can drive us around.

What does an extended car warranty do?

Extended car warranties are also called vehicle service contracts and they are prolonged warranties for your car. They are bought in addition to your standard warranty and they can be purchased for both new and used cars.

An extended car warranty should be purchased before your standard warranty expires, if you are getting it for a new car. If you buy it after the standard one expires, it will cost you more. If you get the extended warranty for a used car, you can buy it any time you want, but not after your car breaks down. Actually, extended car warranty companies have a wait-period anyway, precisely to make sure you don’t buy the warranty just because your car is already broken. Companies specify when you sign the contract that you have to wait for 30 days or 1000 miles before you can use the warranty.

An extended car warranty is great for both new car owners and used car owners. Depending on the service and package you choose, you get some useful benefits such as 24/7 road assistance, reimbursement for a rental car, a hotel and more. Extended car warranties cover various car problems and car components, depending on the company and the plan you opt for.

Protect My Car – Is it worth it?

Protect My Car offers 3 policies with their extended car warranty service. In order to be eligible for their services your car has to be less than 10 years old and with less than 125,000 miles on it.

The three policies offered by Protect My Car are Driveline, Select and Supreme.

Driveline is suitable for cars that are between 4 and 10 years old and have more than 80,000 miles on them. With this policy you get 5 years/125,000 miles of extended warranty for your vehicle.

Select is tailored for cars with more than 50,000 miles.

Supreme is the third and most comprehensive plan offered by Protect My Car and it is very similar to the manufacturer’s new car warranty. This policy is great for customers who need additional insurance because they plan to keep their new car for a longer period of time than the standard warranty.

Protect My Car has a $100 deductible, which is the industry standard. The company lets you pay for the extended car warranty in installments (up to 42 months).

Protect My Car offers rental car reimbursement and they will give you up to $30 per day for up to 7 days. This is a good offer as most companies only offer reimbursement for up to 5 days.

This extended car warranty service also comes with a 30-day money back guarantee in case you are not satisfied with their policy.

All in all, Protect My Car is a good extended car warranty service to consider. It is indulgent when it comes to eligibility terms, it asks for a reasonable deductible and offers more than some competitors.
