PeopleLooker is an online background check service founded by a company based in New York. The service boasts on having run more than 1 million background reports so far. PeopleLooker has several useful tools, so you can use the service for: people lookup, phone number searches, property search and email search.
Just like most internet-based background check services available today, PeopleLooker is not a Consumer Reporting Agency either. That means that, while you can use the service for various purposes, its uses are limited. There are some general “don’ts” with these services, such as:
- You can’t use PeopleLooker for tenant screening
- You can’t use PeopleLooker for employment screening
- You can’t use PeopleLooker for assessing creditworthiness
- You can’t use PeopleLooker when you want to hire household workers (babysitter, gardener, etc.)
- You can’t use PeopleLooker for educational qualification
However, there are a lot of useful applications for this online background check service:
- You can look for lost relatives
- You can track down former classmates or childhood friends you’ve lost contact with
- You can run a background check on an online date
- You can run a background check on a neighbor who just moved in
- You can lookup phone numbers and much more
If you want to use a background check service for the purposes not permitted by PeopleLooker, you have to use a Consumer Reporting Agency. There are four major ones in the United States: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, which are useful for financial and credit information and GoodHire, which is mostly used for employment screening.
Background check services can also be useful if you are trying to find out how exposed your own identity is online. Services such as PeopleLooker take their data from billions of public records and internet sources such as federal and national records, county records, state records, financial records, education and employment records, social media profiles and more. You can run a background check on yourself and see what comes up.
