Summary

The AKG 72 is a must-buy if your budget is within £40. Its audio is comparable to more expensive units. Its design is comfortable for all-day use. It is ideal for computer use. They are also good for music-mixing and monitoring. It is not friendly for public-use, though, because of its audio cable and its poor noise isolation.

Review

AKG Acoustics is an Austrian brand founded in 1947. They are known for their audio products that can be used by both professionals and general consumers. The AKG 72 is one of their entries that is known for its affordable price and good quality.

The AKG 72 is an excellent headphone for those within the price of £40. It stands out because of its sleek design, amazing sound (for its price), and user comfort. With all of these in mind, the usual drawbacks to its price can still be seen with the unit through its lack of a removable cable and a wired remote.

Design

The AKG 72 was designed for long hours of listening while at home or at the office. The headphones have pads that are large and comfortable. It has a circumaural design that relieves pressure. It easily rests on even the biggest ears. This is a big difference from other headphones with a similar price that typically causes pain from long hours of use due to non-fitting pads.

The headband easily fits on your head. It feels durable and steady even with repeated drops.

Its audio cable appears to be quite a problem, though. It is 3 meters long which makes it unfriendly for use while walking. It is also thick and heavy to carry around with your phone. It is also not detachable. This means that it is best used for the computer or within your house or office.

The design for the headphone isn’t really its best spot which should be expected giving its price.

The headphones do not isolate noise well. Its loose fit makes it easy for outside sounds to enter which can make it a hard to use it in public.

Quality of sound

Its quality of sound is comparable to expensive brands. It boasts the use of 40 mm professional audio drivers and a frequency range of 16 Hz to 20,000 HZ.

Its mid-range quality can be a little murky at high volumes and average at best. Vocals can also sound a little unnatural at times.

Its bass is good at delivering complicated beats. It can also be heard even in low volumes. High-range audio does not sound compressed when setting in high volumes which is proof of its good quality. It can handle most pop songs without a problem. It is also excellent in delivering good sound for videos with complicated audio.

The AKG 72 has a frequency response of 16-20,000 HZ, input power of 200mW, a rated impedance of 32 ohms, 40 mm audio drivers, and 112 dB sensitivity.

Conclusion

The AKG 72 is one of the best among its price range. It has a standout high-range and bass audio. It is good for listening to music and watching movies. Its mid-range may sound a little bit coloured and unnatural at high-volumes, though.

It is comfortable enough to be worn all day long. However, it is not friendly for public use because of its poor noise isolation and its long wire. It is more of a ‘computer-headphone’ rather than a casual one.
