If listening to your favorite tunes or podcasts is a regular activity for you, you most likely want a reliable, comfortable and high-quality pair of headphones to be able to rely on. And unless you are a picky audiophile, you don’t want to break the bank with such a purchase. You want the best compromise between quality and price.

If you are looking for a high-quality pair of headphones that is also budget-friendly, you should definitely check out the K72 from AKG.

AKG Acoustics is an Austrian electronics manufacturer with a great reputation and an experience of over 70 years in acoustic engineering. AKG manufactures studio and consumer headphones, microphones, in-ear monitor systems and more.

The K72 headphones are some of their best-selling headphone models, mainly because they are as high-quality as they are affordable.

Price

The AKG K72 can be purchased for only $49.

AKG K72 design, specifications and features

The K72 are advertised as studio headphones and even if they can’t compete with the true professional and costly headphones out there, they can do a more than decent job, considering their incredible price.

The headphones are closed-back. As you may or may not know, headphones can be open-back, closed-back or semi-open.

Closed back headphones are great for people who want headphones that isolate the sound, both the outside one and the one coming from their own headphones. Closed-back headphones are great for commuting, for offices, libraries and other places where you can’t disturb the ones around with your music. These headphones have their back completely sealed, which means their drivers are not at all exposed to the exterior. That means that the sound doesn’t leak at all outside, because they trap the air.

There is a small disadvantage with them however, sound-quality wise, as they tend to sound a bit inferior to open-back headphones. Their sound can be more muffled due to the fact that there’s not enough space for the sound waves to move around from the drivers to your ears. The soundstage effect is not as present either.

The K72 have an average design, but that’s to be expected considering their price. You can’t expect an elegant, premium look from a $50 pair of headphones. The K72 are over the year, they have a 3-meter-long cable, which is more than enough to let you move freely if you are using them for mixing in the studio for instance.

The headphones have Leatherette earpads that can be replaced if damaged and a soft and self-adjusting headband. Even though closed-back headphones are usually uncomfortable to wear for longer periods of time, because they make your ears warm up and sweat really fast, the AKG K72 are the exception. You will be impressed by how comfortable these headphones are, even if you wear them for hours.

AKG K72 specs

The K72 have a frequency response of 16-20,000 Hz, a 32 Ohm impedance and a sensitivity of 112 dB SPL/V. They have 40mm drivers and they only weigh a bit over 7 ounces.

How do the K72 sound?

The AKG K72 may not impress you in terms of design, but that shouldn’t be your number one priority when buying headphones anyway. However, these more than affordable headphones will make up for that through their more than decent sound quality.

The fact that the K72 are rated as studio headphones says something about their sound quality. The wide frequency range of these headphones means that you’ll clearly hear all the frequencies, from highs to lows. The K72 have a very detailed and neutral sound, which is why they can also work as low-budget studio headphones, if you want to use them for mixing.

The audio output is also impressive as is the soundstage, giving the fact that these are closed-back headphones.

All in all, if you want a good sounding pair of headphones at a very decent price, you can’t go wrong with the AKG K72.
