Tablets were hot a few years back, but now, with smartphones getting so much smarter and bigger, they have become pretty obsolete. That doesn’t mean you have to throw your old tablet away. If you’ve got one lying around unused, you can revive it and put it to good use by converting into a digital photo frame.

Digital picture frames can get quite expensive, but there are some really nice and useful apps out there, free and paid, that can turn your tablet into a cool digital media frame.

The first thing you need to do is get a tablet stand that works for your tablet. Then you have to connect your tablet to a WiFi network, to be able to download a photo streaming app.

There are several apps you can use, depending on the type of gadget you have, iPad or Android tablet.

Android:

For Android tablets, one of the most popular apps is Dayframe. Dayframe can be downloaded for free from Google Play Store. This app downloads images from your camera, social websites such as Facebook, Instagram and so on and creates great slideshows. It has several useful options you can mess around with, such as the option to set your slideshows to play automatically as a screensaver, the ability to set the playback timer the way you want (you can even choose specific times of day to play the slideshows), the option to organize your images by categories and more.

Another useful app for Android devices is Photo Slides. You can download the free version or go for the paid, pro one. Photo Slides comes with great options as well, has all sorts of visual effects, a simple interface and it can cope with large libraries that have lots of images.

iOS

If you own an iPad and not and Android tablet, there are also plenty of ways to go. One option is to use the inbuilt Picture Frame feature on your iPad. You can also download picture frame apps.

Picmatic is one such great app that works on iOS devices. It comes with useful features: it transitions slideshows (there are several transitions to choose from, transition effects, filters, etc.), it has music capabilities, gesture control, it can show the time and more.

Other apps you can download on your iPad are LiveFrame, Cherishables, PicFlip, PhotoMontager and more. They all offer cool features and are highly customizable, so that you can create the perfect slideshows, according to your taste and preferences.

Once you’ve decided on an app and you’ve downloaded and installed it, it is time to display your photos. But before you do that, make sure you disable or uninstall all the apps on your tablet, assuming you’re not using any of them anymore, at least not from the tablet. This way you’ll make sure your slideshows won’t be interrupted by any email notifications, pop-ups and so on.

Now put the tablet on its stand, open the picture frame app and enjoy your new improvised digital photo frame.
