Nord VPN Vs Cyberghost VPN comparison

Introduction

When you type the keyword "The Best VPN services" into google search box, two names always come up in the top ten lists, it's NordVPN vs. Cyberghost. The ranking may differ depending on the websites but everybody seems to hold these two companies in high regard.

But, you only need one VPN service, so which one of them deserved your hard-earned money? To find the answer to that question, first, we need to know who they are.

What is NordVPN

NordVPN is a Panama-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) company that operates under a parent company called Tefincom & Co., S.A. Since its inception in 2012, the company has devoted itself to provide free and open internet to its 14 million and growing customers.

Glancing through their "about us" page would reveal how passionate they are about providing the best customer experience while trying to stay as transparent as possible with everything that's been going on in the company.

They even provided a "warrant canary" on their website to inform whether or not they ever received any gag orders or any warrants from any government organizations.

What is CyberGhost VPN

Cyberghost is a VPN company that has been in business since 2011. It is based in Bucharest, Romania, and is owned by a parent company called Kape technologies PLC. since 2017.

With more than 35 million users around the world, CyberGhost is definitely one of the leading companies in the industry.

But even so, CyberGhost still strives to provide more features and support for its customers. From the ever-growing servers and features to extensive support documentation in their FAQ.

Comparison Criteria

To make an objective decision over which services are truly the best option for you, NordVPN and Cyberghost will be judge based on the following criteria:

  • Anonymity. How well are they keeping the anonymity of the users? What kind of features do they have and the steps that they have implemented to ensure that they could always keep the user anonymous?
  • Security and protection. In addition to anonymity, what are the features that they've provided to keep the user secure and protected while using their services?
  • Price. Is the price affordable or at least reasonable? Is there any free trial or money-back policy?
  • Ease of use. How hard is it to use their services? Can anybody who is not well-versed in technology easily use their software/app? Is the UI user friendly?
  • Accessibility. In addition to their ease-of-use, how hard is it for users to gain access over their preferred destination, which means the number of servers and its locations.
  • Speed. Masking and securing a connection will undoubtedly slow down your internet connection, but despite that fact, how fast is it compare to your regular internet speed?
  • Torrent. Does it support a P2P connection through the BitTorrent network? If so, what about the speed?
  • Support. How easy is it for the customer to get the necessary support? How extensive is the documentation on their website? How easy is it to reach them?
NordVPN vs. CyberGhost VPN
  • Anonymity. Both NordVPN and Cyberghost are based on a country with a strong individual privacy policy which is further supported by their Zero Logs Policies and other features that enhance the user anonymity, like NordVPN double VPN feature and Cyberghost ads and tracking blockers.

In the real world, however, both companies have their fair share of creating Headlines in the news. In 2019, NordVPN confirms that there has been a breach of its Finland server's data center. But, the company has since fixed the issue and implement the necessary protection.

As for Cyberghost, its parent company, Kape Technologies PLC. is formerly known as Crossrider. A company that specializes in creating malware, especially adware, in software bundlers. Although Cyberghost itself has repeatedly assured the public that they will continue to provide the best VPN for its user, we can't help but feel anxious towards its future.
  • Security and protection. Both VPN is equal in this regard. They provide AES 256-bit, military-grade encryption that works through OpenVPN protocol, among others, and has a kill switch features to protect you in case you're suddenly disconnected from their services.
  • Price. When this article is written, NordVPN offers a US$4.92 per month for its summer deal, while Cyberghost offers a whopping US$2.75 per month. Both of these prices are for their annual plans. Discount aside, CyberGhost also has a lower price tag in its one and six-month plans compare to NordVPN.

NordVPN doesn't have any free-trial program but they do have a 30-day money-back guarantee. Cyberghost, on the other hand, offers a one-day free trial with a 45-day money-back guarantee.
  • Ease of use. Again, both companies are tied in this category. Not only do they incredibly simple to set up, the software/apps also have a slick and modern user interface that is easy and straight forward to use.
  • Accessibility. NordVPN boasts over 5300 servers in 59 countries that could simultaneously connect up to six devices at the same time. Cyberghost, however, has over 6300 servers that spread across 88 countries. Not to mention, while NordVPN support all the major platform like windows, mac, Linux, ios, android, and a handful of browsers extension, Cyberghost support the same platform plus routers, smart TVs, and even gaming consoles.
  • Speed. Bear in mind that internet speed is highly dependant on various things like your location, base speed, ISPs, and several other factors. That being said, NordVPN has constantly performed faster for me in spite of Cyberghost's overwhelming number of servers and locations. So this one is for the Nord.
  • Torrent. Both of them support encrypted and protected P2P activities in most of their servers, but for torrenting, I have the same experience regarding speed. NordVPN and Cyberghost offer the feature to select the best P2P servers for you and in spite of CyberGhost having much more servers, NordVPN constantly perform faster no matter how many times I tried
  • Support. For the third time, both companies are tied. NordVPN and Cyberghost provide multiple ways to contact them and they also provide extensive documentation on their website to help solve your problems.
Best VPN between CyberGhost and NordVPN

The winner is NordVPN.

Both of the VPN giants are tied for security & protection, ease-of-use, and support. But while Cyberghost is well ahead in price and accessibility, NordVPN sweeps the floor with speed, torrent, and the most important of all, anonymity.

The whole Kape Technologies thing may be speculation on my part, but as users who concerns about security and anonymity, we can't simply ignore the despicable way they've earn money in the past. Infecting the user's PC for money is bad no matter how you look at it.

In the meantime, NordVPN has flatly refused a direct order by the Russian government to join on their banned website program which resulted in the company's Russian server to be shut down in April 2019.

Is it any wonder that NordVPN ends up winning on the anonymity category? So if you are wondering who is better between CyberGhost against NordVPN there is no question that is left outstanding to the decision, and why we have chosen Nord as the Best for now.
