COMPLETE REVIEW

Nixplay Seed is developed by Nixplay, a division of Creedon Technologies, just like NIX. Creedon Technologies is a British company founded in 2007. The company has offices in UK, US, Canada, China, Philippines.

Nixplay Seed comes in several sizes and colors. You can get it in black, white, blue, mulberry and mango. You can opt for the 7, 8, 10, 10 inch Widescreen display.

The Nixplay Seed 10 inch has the following specifications:

  • Dimensions (Width x Height x Depth): 9.37 x 6.34 x 0.9 inches
  • Weight: 470g
  • Screen resolution: 1024 x 768 HD
  • Aspect ratio: 4:3
  • Brightness: 350 cd/m2
  • Supported photo format: JPEG/JPG/PNG
  • Storage: 8GB internal memory (20,000 photos)
  • Infra-red and Hu-motion sensor (active range: 2.5m)
  • 1 x 1.5W speaker
  • Wireless connectivity: 802.11 b/g/n

The first note-worthy thing about the Nixplay Seed is its WiFi connectivity. This is what changes everything in the way digital frames work. You no longer have to be near the frame to have access to the content on it, you can do that by simply logging into your Nixplay account from anywhere, as long as you have an Internet connection. The Nixplay mobile app is compatible with both iOS and Android devices.

Once you create an account, you can start administrating the way the frame works and what photos you display on it. You can have photos sent via email or you can send them directly from your Facebook account, Instagram, Flickr, etc. You can either add a friend or family member’s email to the app, so that they’re able to send photos or you can give them full access to your account.

The beauty of an WiFi digital photo frame is that you can get it as a gift for your grandparents and leave it at their house, while you control the photos on it, no matter where you are. You can update the photo collections and how they are displayed, without troubling them with all the tedious tech info and steps. All they need is a wireless network to connect the frame to.

The Nixplay Seed has a slim design and works by plugging it into an outlet. It only has internal memory (8GB – 20,000 photos), no USB or card slot.

In order to get started you have to use the infra-red remote that comes with the frame. That’s how you get it started and set up your frame and account. Once you get it connected to the WiFi, you never have to use its physical controls, if you don’t want to. Regarding the WiFi support, you should know that the Nixplay Seed only works on the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz one. The frame might update its firmware if necessary, but after that, you can start to configure it.

One thing we’ve noticed is the lack of a stand for the frame, although the included cable can be used to prop it up, but you shouldn’t rely on it entirely.

Your photos are organized in albums and playlists and you can set various transitions and the ways to display them. From the app you can control more than just one digital frame, if you have several of them. You can configure everything from the mobile app as well. You also have an Activity Feed in the app, so you can see the new photos that were added.

The Nixplay Seed has a motion sensor and you can set how it works, when the frame becomes idle and more.

Although the Nixplay Seed supports PNG images too, unlike their Advance model which only works with JPEG/JPG, the Seed doesn’t have the ability to play videos, while the Nix Advance can. This might be a deal breaker for some people.

Overall though, the Nixplay Seed is a smart digital frame that allows a lot of freedom both in terms of configuration and administration of the photos on it. It works with all social media platforms, it is easy to set up and offers a lot of mobility, thanks to its dedicated interface and app. Aside from the video playback capacity, it is definitely a great choice in terms of digital photo frames.

Pricing

On Amazon, the price of the Nixplay Seed 10 inch is $180. In the box you get the frame, a cable stand, the remote control, a power adapter and the manual. The frame comes with 30 day-money back guarantee and one year labor and parts warranty.
