Introduction

Garage doors guard your car and valuables from natural disasters and thieves. However, it happens that your door fails. When your trusty, automatic opener doesn't work for a day, it's just a way of telling you that something is wrong and that it needs a maintenance check. There is no need to panic; you can do some repairs yourself simply because most of them are not that demanding. Read more about it below.

Silencing Noisy Garage Doors

Loud garage doors cause all sorts of issues, especially for someone who has to sleep above or next to the garage. Fortunately, most major garage door problems can be fixed with a combination of routine maintenance and the replacement of a few parts.

You can use a heat gun or even a hair dryer to melt the ice. Standard de-icing products will also work. Be cautious not to damage the door or seal at the bottom of the door, and use a flat shovel or something similar to force it onto the ice.

When you open the door, clear water, ice, or snow from the spot on the garage floor where the door rests when it's closed. That way, you should be able to plan to open the door the next time you need it.

Watch out for Your Safety

Garage doors are much more secure these days than they used to be. This is mainly true for garage doors supplied with garage door remote controllers. Older garage door openers didn't have the safety features that would prevent them from closing on a child or you while you're getting in and out. It has many tragic stories. That is why sometimes it is wisest to contact the experts when you need garage door repair, to avoid such unwanted events. Despite the security improvements, they have not eliminated security concerns regarding garage doors. Everyone should understand how to stay safe in the garage.

The Door Does Not Respond to the Remote Control

Remote controls provide an easy way for us to control electronics, but sometimes they stop working for unknown reasons. If the power is on and the door does not respond, there may be a problem with the door motor or the remote is broken. Check the remote control batteries first and just in case, change them, then move closer to the sensor and try to move the door again. If the sensor receives a signal and still does not respond, it means that the problem is in the engine.

The Garage Door Won't Open and You're Trapped Inside

Automatic doors provide us with a convenient way to open and close them with the simple push of a button. However, when the controls don't respond to commands, the remote doesn't work, and you're late for work in the garage, don't panic. It would be logical to check whether your garage mechanism is unplugged. If it is turned on and still refuses to run, check the wires and fuses.

Your motor may have failed due to excessive use. In that case, call the garage door team. Never attempt to repair electrical components by yourself. You can cause a major breakdown or fire. Use the manual settings that will be specifically explained to you by the garage door team and it will open.

Basic Repair of Garage Doors

Start by checking the tape that holds the wheels in case the door rolls due to obstacles or blocks. Too much dirt in the metal strips can cause the garage door to stick.

If the track or strip is damaged, bent, or not in good shape, use a hammer to restore it to its original condition. This will allow unhindered movement toward the door. The level will help you to know if the strips are straight. Considering that today's garage doors are made of different materials, some will need a little more care than others.

Loosening screws over time can cause the sweep strips to shift at an angle that is not perpendicular to the garage door. So, with a screwdriver, tighten all the screws that hold the tracks in place. If the tapes are in very bad shape, well, then they will need to be replaced.

To repair a malfunctioning garage door, you first need to clean and lubricate the wheels. The irony is that the damask used to lubricate the garage door parts sometimes hardens in the cracks and the door becomes dysfunctional. To clean the debris, use a normal household cleaner and re-lubricate the garage door with garage door lubricant.
