There are many ways to brew coffee and many types of coffee machines you can use. Depending on the design, mechanism and features, we can name several coffeemakers: drip coffee makers, percolators, French presses, single cup coffee makers, espresso machines and more.

But the most popular, affordable and widely used of them has to be the drip coffee maker. Chances are you’ll find one in every household you set foot in. Automatic drip coffee makers are budget-friendly, they come in a plethora of sizes, capacities and price ranges, they are easy to use and are equipped with lots of useful features, depending on the brand, model and especially price.

The first electric drip brewer was manufactured in the 50’s, although drip coffeemakers only started to become truly popular in the 70’s. Since then, they went through significant changes and improvements. The mechanism and main parts however stayed pretty much the same. A drip coffee maker consists of the water reservoir, the coffee pot and the filter. Depending on the model, they can also have functions such as programmability, settings for the brewing time, (which also affects the strength/flavor of the coffee), an alarm for when the coffee is ready and more.

A few factors to consider when choosing a drip coffee maker

One of the most important aspects you have to consider when in the market for a drip coffee maker is, of course, your budget. You can get a drip coffee maker for as low as $15 or you can even pay thousands of dollars for a high-end machine, with a built-in coffee grinder and other fancy features.

Another factor to consider is the capacity of the carafe. Depending on your needs, you can choose a model with a 4, 10 or even 14-cup carafe.

Filter type is also important and if you can afford it, try to go with a permanent filter rather than disposable ones. If you do opt for a paper filter, make sure you buy high-quality ones that don’t contain chemicals that can alter the flavor of the coffee.

Features are also important and the more you pay, the more functions you get. Among the most common ones are the ‘keep warm’ function, settings for the brewing time, the ability to schedule the brewing and others.

Are drip coffeemakers any good?

The answer is without a doubt, yes! Drip coffee makers are popular for some good reasons: they are affordable, they are very easy to use and most of them are programmable. They also allow you to make more than 10 cups of coffee at once, depending on their capacity.
